Chapter 21
Dear Sophie,
I love the idea of a home control center but Iâm on a tight budget. How can I do it for less?
Mom of Six in Childwold, New York
Dear Mom of Six,
Go to your dollar store. Buy a clipboard for each childâs papers and hang them in horizontal rows. Add a big calendar for appointments and a chalkboard for daily events. Buy hooks for keys and a basket for mail. If it looks disjointed, paint a border around the whole thing!
Sophie
Natasha strode up to Frank and me. âMay I have a word, please, Sophie?â
I excused myself and followed Natasha. âWhatâs up?â
âIâm sick. You wonât believe this.â
We were still walking. âWhere are we going?â I asked.
âTo The Laughing Hound.â
âGreat! Iâm starved.â
She glanced at me. âYou canât stay there.â
âWhy not?â
âYouâll see.â She pulled open the door and waved away the hostess.
âWe have to make ourselves invisible,â she said.
I snapped my fingers. âBut I left my cloak of invisibility at home!â
âShh.â She sidled toward the bar. âLook for just a second, so you wonât be seen. The table all the way in the back on the right.â
I peeked around the corner. âMars is here.â
Natasha pulled me back. âDid you not notice who was with him?â
I looked again and stepped back. âGreer Shacklesworth.â
Natasha crossed her arms. âWhat are we going to do about it?â
âWe? Mars is a free agent. And Greer is very attractive. Good for him,â I said.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â she whispered. âCanât you see that sheâs seducing him?â
âWhat do you want me to do? Go sit next to him?â
Natasha eyed me. âThatâs not a bad idea. We could both pull up chairs and interrupt their little tête-à -tête.â
âIt was a joke, Natasha,â I said.
âUm-hmm. Look at them now.â
I peeked again. Greer was definitely getting closer and gazing into his eyes. Wow.
I stepped back. âWe are not interfering. Letâs get a bite to eat.â
âGreat idea!â Natasha walked into the room and straight up to the table where Mars sat with Greer.
I wasnât playing her game. I headed for the bar and tried to ignore her when she called, âSophie! Look whoâs here!â
âSophie!â Natashaâs voice grew insistent.
Reluctantly I turned around and found Dr. Peter Chryssos smiling at me. He was seated at a small table, evidently having lunch.
âI believe someone wants your attention,â he said.
My gaze flicked over to Mars. I hoped he wasnât on a date with Greer, because Natasha had already pulled up a chair and was gesturing wildly for me to join them.
âAre you eating alone, Dr. Chryssos?â I asked. âWould you mind if I joined you?â
âBy all means.â
âThanks. Iâll be right back.â
I made my way to Marsâs table and ignored Natashaâs entreaties to sit down. After all, she had achieved her goal of disrupting Greerâs intentions toward Mars, assuming she had any intentions. âWhere is Nina?â I hissed at Mars.
âIn the back with Bernie. Donât worry, we havenât abandoned her.â
I gave him a thumbs-up and went to join Dr. Chryssos, who appeared to be eating a hefty grilled sandwich. âThat looks good, Dr.
